Detection Camps
In 1997, the project ‘Saving Women from Cancer’ was launched. Since then, more than 9,348 women from slums, villages and city offices have been screened for cervical and breast cancer, two common types of cancer in Indian women. Breast self-examination is explained at the camp. Factory workers, police personnel, employees of ST and Bus depots, Labourers of Stone quarries, inmates of Pune Central Jail, Beggars' Home, Audyogig School, members of the press, employees of New India Assurance and Rotary Club membershave been screened at our camps. On World No Tobacco Day people are screened for lung and oral cancers. Regular camps are held at Inlaks and Budhrani Hospital, Ruby Hall, Pune, in rural areas, and at the Cancer Patients Aid Association's centre at 8 Uttam Towers, Nagar Road, Pune. Our doctors are competent and friendly medicos who do a thorough examination and reassure women who are scared to even talk about any lumps in the breast or other problems. Cervical and breast cancers are curable if treated in time. Pap smears and yearly check-ups are essential for women who succumb to these cancers due to negligence, sheer ignorance and fear.
